A New Jockey Arrives

Share

A new face in the local jockey’s colony will make his Santa Anita debut today.

Apprentice Kevin Krigger, who won 54 races to finish in a tie for fifth at the recently concluded Golden Gate Fields season, is named on two horses.

The 18-year-old native of the Virgin Islands will ride two maidens, Bonair Lake for trainer John Sadler in the sixth and Para Usted for trainer Henry Moreno in the eighth.

The door is certainly open for an apprentice to shine during the remaining weeks of the Santa Anita meet and when Hollywood Park kicks off April 24. Elvis Trujillo, who has won 15 races at Santa Anita, recently returned from injury and will now begin a suspension Friday for misuse of the whip in Saturday’s second race.

After rushing Hushed Victory to the lead in the $10,000 claimer and opening up through fast fractions (45 2/5 for the half-mile), Trujillo continued to whip Hushed Victory even after the 6-year-old had been passed and clearly had nothing more to give. Hushed Victory fell at the top of the stretch and had to be euthanized, reportedly because of an ankle injury.

A more established jockey will be at Lone Star Park tonight to help the Grand Prairie, Texas, track begin its 70-day meet.

Jerry Bailey, the country’s perennial leading rider, will have mounts in four races, including Lights On Broadway in the $50,000 Premiere Stakes, a mile contest restricted to Texas-breds.

Race of the day: Mon Ange shortens up to her preferred game--sprinting--and will meet sharpies such as Whoopddoo, Our Here Tiz and Skywriting in today’s seventh at Santa Anita. The $57,000 optional claimer drew seven entrants and will be run at 61/2 furlongs.

Who’s hot: Cole Norman. The trainer is the runaway leader in the trainer standings at Oaklawn Park. He started the new week with 36 wins, 16 more than runner-up Stanley Roberts.

Who’s not: James McCoy. The trainer is one for 47 at Oaklawn.

Exotically speaking: A pick all singling Lady Eddie in the first, Tiger Trap in the second, and Our Man Red in the third, using High Counselor and Sir Maskalot in the fourth, Main Street Rub and Kickin Clover in the fifth, Wagon and Enorme in the sixth, Mon Ange and Whoopddoo in the seventh and Morning Wine and Politarium in the eighth.
