He Takes Show on Road

Those wondering why jockey Kent Desormeaux has been absent from the entries at Santa Anita should look east.

Second to Alex Solis in the standings as Santa Anita winds down, Desormeaux had mounts at Keeneland Wednesday and today, then will ride in New York this weekend.

Desormeaux is on four horses today, including two for trainer Bobby Frankel. His first mount is Tempestuous Wind, a 3-year-old son of Danzig trained by John Kimmel and second at 14-1 in his first start last month at Gulfstream Park. Tempestuous Wind breaks from post 11 going seven furlongs in the fourth.

He will then ride Beefeater Baby for Frankel in the sixth, a nine-furlong allowance race for fillies and mares on the turf, and Tates Creek for the trainer in the $100,000-added Jenny Wiley at 11/16 miles on the grass. Desormeaux will conclude his day on Sharbayan, who will make his second U.S. start for Wally Dollase in the ninth, a nine-furlong contest on grass.

The filly to beat in the Wiley, a Grade III, is Snow Dance. Trained by John Ward for owner John Oxley, she has won six of eight on the turf. Most recently, she won the Suwanee River, another Grade III, on March 3 at Gulfstream Park. She will again be ridden by Pat Day.

Race of the day: The fifth at Santa Anita, a contentious sprint on the hillside turf course, is the third leg of a pick six that has a carryover of almost $115,000.

Who’s hot: Victor Espinoza. The jockey won three times Wednesday, including a 15-1 surprise on Continental Miss.

Who’s not: Michael Gass. The trainer, now based at Oaklawn Park, is two for 48 this year.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Instant Karma, A Lil Sweet, King La Boo and Tender Lovin Jones in the sixth, Eyes Wide Open, Raypour and Justice Minister in the seventh and singling Rather Be Wild in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/211. Money: Previous day/meet total: $12.60/$1,227. Total money bet: $1,306.
