Burrell Beats the Braves

Pat Burrell pumped his fist, pointed into the dugout and watched the ball soar into the left-field seats.

Burrell’s two-run homer in the 11th inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night.

Even though it was Burrell’s second walkoff homer in four games--his solo shot in the 11th beat the Florida Marlins, 3-2, Sunday--he still didn’t know how to react.

Was he pointing at someone specific in Philadelphia’s dugout?

“No, I don’t know what I was doing,” Burrell said. “I was just excited.”

The Phillies, who finished two games behind Atlanta in the NL East last season, won their second in a row for the first time this year.

Scott Rolen’s two-out homer in the ninth off John Smoltz sent the game into extra innings.

Smoltz, who hadn’t given up a run in two appearances after giving up eight runs in the ninth inning of an 11-2 loss to the Mets last Saturday, retired the first two batters.

But Rolen, who had popped out with one out and the tying run on third against Smoltz in Monday night’s 2-1 loss, hit the first pitch deep into the left-center field seats.

“I tried to bury it outside, but I threw it right down the middle,” Smoltz said.
