Injured Wrist Keeps Sheffield Out Again

Gary Sheffield was held out of the lineup for the third consecutive game Friday night as the Atlanta Braves’ right fielder nurses a sprained left wrist.

Sheffield, who was not available for comment, took a cortisone shot Thursday. He was hit by pitches twice at Philadelphia on April 11.

Sheffield, a former Dodger, is batting .263 with three homers and nine runs batted in. He is hitless in his last 11 at-bats.

Moises Alou, who has played in only three games for the Chicago Cubs this season, will sit out the rest of the weekend with a stiff back.... Tests to see if Houston Astro pitcher Wade Miller has disk or circulatory problems have come back negative. Miller, the Astros’ opening-day starter, was put on the 15-day disabled list Monday with neck and arm pain.... Cleveland Indian shortstop Omar Vizquel has a sore right knee and wasn’t in the starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.... Detroit Tiger first baseman Dmitri Young missed Friday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox with a slight groin pull.... Left-handed reliever Ray King was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Milwaukee Brewers, who optioned pitcher Brian Mallette to triple-A Indianapolis.
