William F. Stewart, 65; Retired National Guard Commanding General
Maj. Gen. William F. Stewart, 65, a retired commanding general of the California Army National Guard’s 40th Infantry Division, died April 15 at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. The cause of death was not announced.
Born in Cleveland, Stewart graduated from UCLA, where he earned his law degree. He practiced law as a deputy counsel for Los Angeles. He later served as the first director of the county’s Internal Services Department.
Stewart’s Army National Guard career began in 1962, when he enlisted in what was then the 40th Armored Division. He completed basic training at Ft. Ord and obtained his commission through the California Military Academy in 1964. He graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College.
Stewart started as a judge advocate general officer and rose through the ranks to major general in the Army National Guard. He served as commanding general of the 40th Infantry Division from August 1993 until July 1996.
