Beat Secures Final Playoff Spot

Nikki Serlenga and Kelly Cagle scored, and Briana Scurry earned her sixth shutout as the Atlanta Beat secured the last playoff spot with a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Charge on Saturday in front of 7,590 at Atlanta.

Atlanta (11-9-1) joined the Charge as repeat playoff teams in the league’s second season.

Philadelphia (11-4-6) was shut out for only the second time. Scurry equaled her season-high with seven saves.

Boston 1, San Jose 0--Kristine Lilly scored in the 51st minute as the Breakers (6-8-7) defeated the CyberRays (8-8-5) in front of 6,013 at Boston. Lilly has a goal or an assist in a league-record 10 consecutive games.

Boston, which did not make the playoffs, is the first team in the league’s two-year history to finish unbeaten at home (5-0-5). The Breakers were 1-8-2 on the road.

The CyberRays, who won the WUSA championship last year, were eliminated from the playoffs when Atlanta beat Philadelphia.

Washington 4, New York 2--Mia Hamm, Emmy Barr and Jacqui Little scored second-half goals as the playoff-bound Freedom (11-5-5) defeated the last-place Power (3-17-1) in front of 7,635 at Uniondale, N.Y.
