SPCA Finds 39 Cats Living in Motel Room
Animal care workers who raided a motel Monday found 39 cats, many underweight and sick, in a room.
The case will be turned over to the city attorney’s office for possible prosecution of their owner, Phillip Appleman, said Madeline Bernstein, president of the Los Angeles chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Bernstein said the SPCA received a tip on its animal cruelty hotline. They raided the Tangiers Motel on Sepulveda Boulevard about 6 a.m. and found the cats living among feces and roaches in one small room and an adjoining bathroom.
The cats were taken to a shelter in Hawthorne for medical evaluation.
