Marymount Wins Again

Share

It wasn’t quite as easy this time, but Los Angeles Marymount was able to defeat Atherton Menlo in the state Division IV girls’ volleyball championship for the third consecutive year.

Led by the 15 kills and 34 assists of Stesha Selsky, named the state tournament’s most valuable player in Division IV, Marymount came away with a 10-15, 15-4, 15-3, 15-10 victory Saturday at Cypress College.

“They were much better than they were a year ago because all of their players were back,” Selsky said of the Knights (24-7), who were swept by Marymount each of the two previous years. “We thought we’d come out and win it easily but you have to give them credit. That first game woke us up.”

All-tournament selections Virginia Levanas and Jenna Dykstra sparked a 12-3 run to open the fourth game for Marymount (36-4).

Levanas finished with 10 kills and 10 blocks while Dykstra added 10 kills and 42 assists. Liz Cvitan had 10 kills and seven blocks and Sandy Barbut had six kills and four aces for the Sailors.

Marymount improved to 139-17 in Coach Cari Klein’s five seasons.
