Wilson In a Division I Stroll Over Villa Park

Lauren Silver and Lauren Wenger scored four goals each Thursday and Long Beach Wilson began the Southern Section Division I girls’ water polo playoffs with a 14-7 victory over Villa Park at the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Center.

The Bruins, No. 8 in The Times’ rankings, scored three unanswered goals in the final two minutes of the first quarter to take a 6-2 lead.

Cara Colton scored for Villa Park early in the second quarter to cut the lead to 6-3, but Silver answered with two goals and the Spartans never got closer than four the remainder of the game.

Wilson (20-9) will play fourth-seeded Lake Forest El Toro in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site to be determined.

Irvine 6, Anaheim Canyon 5--Irvine tied the score, 5-5, with one second remaining in the third quarter on Miho Umezawa’s goal, then won the game on a goal by Kristin Klingaman with 3:03 to play.

Sara Kenworthy drew four ejections and defender Sara Natalizio had seven steals for the visiting Vaqueros (15-12), who host top-seeded Santa Margarita in a Division I quarterfinal on Saturday.

Hacienda Heights Los Altos 4, Whittier 2--Denise Valderrama scored two goals from two meters to open the second half, giving Los Altos (23-7) a 4-1 lead in the upset over host Whittier in a Division III second-round game.

Whittier (24-6), the Del Rio League champion, was ranked fifth in the final Southern Section division poll. Los Altos was unranked after finishing second in the Miramonte League. Josephine Samsing had 11 saves, five in the fourth quarter, for Los Altos.

Santa Monica 10, Fullerton Sunny Hills 8--Sarah Samantilla, Jackie Len, Kristen Hundley, Sally Sachs and Jessi Lafayette each had two goals for host Santa Monica (17-11), which scored five unanswered goals in the second and third quarters to build an 8-3 lead in the Division IV first-round game.

Etiwanda 10, Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon 3--Ashley Hays had five goals and Brittany Beluomini added two for host Etiwanda (23-7) in a Division V second-round victory. Laura Wright had 16 saves for Etiwanda.
