Coverage Depends on How You See It

It is Jan. 5, 2002, and the front page of the L.A. Times sports section has a one-sentence acknowledgement of the Clippers’ victory at Denver last night.

I know that The Times is a bandwagon supporter of the Lakers like the rest of Southern California, but I feel it is a disgrace how the Clippers are treated by you. The Clippers are a very competitive young NBA team that has to take a back seat to Steve Spurrier’s resignation, Dennis Green’s firing, two articles on Tony Tavares’ resignation (who cares?) and articles on USC and UCLA victories.

L.A. Times, where is the love for the Clippers? Maybe they haven’t earned the coverage that the other pampered, overpaid team pro team in the city receives, but they do deserve better treatment and more respect than you give.

The Los Angeles Kings have lost only two of their previous 11 road games and only three of their previous 16 games, yet they continue to be deprived of front-page coverage.

The Los Angeles Clippers, on the other hand, have only won two of their previous 13 road games, yet they continue to be featured on the front page.

Shouldn’t the performance of the team determine media coverage, instead of having the (supposedly impartial) media determine the teams’ coverage? Just curious.
