Canada, Costa Rica Win Quarterfinals

Jason Bent’s goal in the seventh round of penalty kicks gave defending champion Canada a victory over Martinique in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup on Saturday night at Miami’s Orange Bowl.

Canada advanced to Wednesday night’s semifinals at the Rose Bowl against the winner of today’s game between the United States and El Salvador.

Canada beat Martinique, 6-5, in a shootout, after the teams tied, 1-1, in regulation.

After falling behind, 1-0, on an own goal midway through the second half, Canada’s Kevin McKenna tied the score in the 73rd minute with his third goal of the tournament.

Martinique had a 4-3 lead in penalties and only needed Fabrice Reuperne’s conversion on the fifth attempt to secure the match, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Both teams converted in the sixth round, but Pascal Lina hit the right post on Martinique’s next attempt, setting up Bent’s game-winner.

Costa Rica 2, Haiti 1--Ronald Gomez’s goal in the eighth minute of overtime lifted Costa Rica in a quarterfinal game at Miami.

With his teammates pursuing Gomez, goalkeeper Geteau Ferdinand was screened and could not react to Gomez’s 28-yard, left-footed shot, which landed inside the left post.

Costa Rica advanced to the semifinals Wednesday at the Rose Bowl against the winner of today’s quarterfinal between Mexico and Korea.

Walter Centeno’s goal in the second minute on a pass from Gomez put Costa Rica ahead, 1-0.

Golman Pierre pulled Haiti even in the 62nd minute on a header, sending the game into overtime.
