Glaus in Fifth Place in All-Star Balloting

Share

Mike Scioscia knows that, when it comes to All-Star selections, the final decisions are made in the stands, not on the field. The Angel manager knows it’s often a popularity contest. And, with his team in the middle of the pack in attendance with an average of 22,919 at Edison Field, the votes haven’t been there for his players.

“The teams drawing well have more impact,” Scioscia said. “Most fans vote at the ballpark. Maybe some of our players are not getting enough consideration and maybe the fans are not in tune, but, within the baseball world, our players get the proper consideration.”

The Angel getting the most consideration for this year’s All-Star game, which will be played here at Miller Park on July 9, is Troy Glaus, who is fifth in balloting among third basemen. With 248,482 votes, Glaus, who began Friday’s game hitting .250 with 13 home runs and 52 runs batted in, trails the leader, Shea Hillenbrand of the Boston Red Sox, by 146,000 votes.

Ask Scioscia who else deserves consideration, and, like any loyal manager whose team is having a good year, he rattles off a list of names, singling out Troy Percival, Tim Salmon, Darin Erstad, David Eckstein and Garret Anderson.

“A lot of guys get squeezed out,” he said. “I don’t know why they don’t just make it 35 guys on each team.”

He might not be saying that if he had to manage such a team. Nearly four full lineups jammed into nine innings? Talk about getting squeezed out.

Utility man Shawn Wooten, recovering from a strained muscle on his right side suffered on May 31, worked out before Friday’s game and aggressively ran the bases. The Angels hopes to give Wooten, who reports no pain, a rehabilitation assignment by next week.

The Angels hadn’t faced the Brewers since Milwaukee left the American League following the 1997 season. The Angels were 178-167 against the Brewers before they switched leagues, 83-89 on the road.

Outfielder/infielder Clay Bellinger was outrighted off the Angels’ 40-man roster Thursday. Right-handed pitcher Bobby Jenks was transferred from double-A Arkansas to Class-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Update--For Washburn, this is homecoming night. He was born in La Crosse, Wis., graduated from Webster High and attended the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Scioscia refers to Washburn as “Cheesehead.” Washburn says he has lost count of how many friends and relatives plan on attending tonight’s game, but says one aunt has gotten 62 tickets. This will be Washburn’s first appearance against the Brewers.
