Reds’ White Hospitalized
Reliever Gabe White was hospitalized Friday with a major infection in his pitching hand, leaving the Cincinnati Reds without a left-hander in their bullpen.
White got a small infection on the side of his left hand, possibly the result of an insect bite, and squeezed it to clean it out before the Reds’ 3-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.
White developed a fever and the swelling started to spread up his arm overnight, so he was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital for intravenous antibiotics. Doctors also made a two-inch incision to clean out the infection.
“This is dangerous stuff,” Dr. Timothy Kremchek said. “It’s the type of infection that could be limb-threatening or life-threatening. If he had let this go, I’m convinced he could be in real trouble.”
