Bonds, Kent Engage in Shoving Match

The most startling hit Barry Bonds delivered Tuesday night was in the dugout, against his San Francisco Giant teammate, Jeff Kent.

Bonds shoved Kent in the chest during a scrape that spiced up the San Diego Padres’ 10-7 victory over the feuding Giants at San Diego. Bonds hit his 592nd career homer in the third inning, right after the dustup, and Kent hit a homer in the sixth.

The dispute appeared to begin with Kent talking to third baseman David Bell. Bonds got involved and as the argument escalated, he shoved Kent.

Bonds has stopped talking to reporters and Kent refused to talk to anyone but a handful of San Francisco beat writers.

“It wasn’t even between them. Know what I’m saying?” Manager Dusty Baker said. “Some guys got into it. It wasn’t even between them.”

Last season, Kent criticized Bonds’ standoffish nature.

In the second, Bell fielded Julius Matos’ high chopper and tried to force Wiki Gonzalez at second. Kent came off the bag too soon and Gonzalez was safe before Kent could get his foot back on the bag.

The Padres scored four runs in the inning for a 5-0 lead. The Giants led, 7-5, going into the bottom of the seventh before the Padres rallied.

Houston 7, Arizona 3--Jeff Bagwell and Geoff Blum each hit two-run homers in the eighth inning to lift the Astros at Houston.

New York 7, Atlanta 4--Steve Trachsel (6-6) retired the first 15 batters at New York, and the Mets defeated Albie Lopez, who replaced the injured Greg Maddux.

Cincinnati 5, Chicago 2--Luis Pineda (1-3) won his first major-league start, and the Reds hit three homers at Chicago to end an eight-game skid.

Pittsburgh 4, Montreal 1--Kris Benson (1-4), who sat out last season because of elbow surgery, pitched five strong innings at Pittsburgh to help the Pirates end a six-game losing streak.

Philadelphia 7, Florida 6--Jimmy Rollins scored a career-high four runs, including the go-ahead run in the 11th inning at Miami on Bobby Abreu’s single.
