From Staff and Wire Reports

Pete Sampras faced a double whammy--his history at the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic and his record against Wayne Ferreira--that he couldn’t overcome Thursday night.

Ferreira beat the 13-time Grand Slam champion, who has never advanced past the second round at Scottsdale, Ariz., 7-5, 7-5.

The South African’s sixth win over Sampras in 12 meetings put him into a quarterfinal against No. 7 Xavier Malisse today.

The upset deprived the tournament of a possible match between Sampras and Andre Agassi, who plays Juan Ignacio Chela today.

Malisse beat Andrea Gaudenzi, taking, 7-5, 7-6 (6). In other matches, Rainer Schuettler beat Felix Mantilla, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1, and Carlos Moya defeated Fernando Vicente, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
