Davidson Is a One-Hit Wonder

Tony Davidson threw a one-hitter and shaky defense by Villa Park allowed Dana Hills to score all its runs unearned in a 7-1 victory over The Times’ No. 8-ranked team Thursday night in a Loara tournament semifinal game at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

Dana Hills (4-0) advances to play Lakewood in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Glover Stadium.

The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brent Lawson, who reached base on an error, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Matt Cooper.

Davidson (1-0) went out and retired 15 consecutive batters. Dana Hills scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning when Matt Falk had a two-run single to drive in Ryan Green, who reached on an error, and Adam Blankenbiller, who had walked.

Davidson retired the first batter in the sixth before walking Dane Ferguson on a full count to end his perfect-game bid.

Four errors by Villa Park (3-1) and a two-run single by Kevin Fouret added up to four runs in the seventh.

Davidson lost his no-hitter when Erik Averill laid down a drag bunt to lead off the bottom half of the seventh.

“Everything was working for him,” Dana Hills Coach Zeke Barragan said. “He was hitting his spots and he was really focused.”

Saugus 13, Harbor City Narbonne 5--Matt Underwood had two doubles and drove in four runs for the Centurions (4-0), who won a Westside tournament Red division semifinal game.

Matt Romero had a double, scored three runs and drove in two for Saugus, which will play Chatsworth in the division final at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Luke Ajer pitched six innings for the Centurions, giving up three earned runs.

Canyon Country Canyon 7, Camarillo 6--Clay Britton, who had three hits, completed a two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning with a run-scoring single to give Canyon (4-0) a victory over host Camarillo (3-1) in a Westside tournament Blue division semifinal game.

Canyon used two walks and three passed balls with two outs to score the tying run and set up Britton’s game-winning hit. Jake Coash (2-0) pitched 41/3innings in relief to for the victory, although he gave up a grand slam to Justin Frash in the fifth inning, which allowed Camarillo to take a 6-5 lead.

Ryan Burke had a home run in the first inning, Justin Schwartz had a two-run double in the fourth inning and Eric Ashbrook drove in runs with a single and a groundout for Canyon, which plays Newbury Park in the division final at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Newbury Park 3, Hawthorne 1--Doug Webb had a two-run home run and freshman right-hander Andy Kellog (2-0) pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10 for Newbury Park (4-0) in a Westside tournament Red division semifinal victory over host Hawthorne (3-1).

West Torrance 15, Los Angeles Loyola 2--Tony Asaro had three hits and drove in five runs to lead the Warriors (3-1) to a victory in an El Segundo tournament semifinal.

Cerritos Gahr 6, Whittier 3--Eric Gardea went two for two with a double, drove in a run and had a stolen base to lead the Gladiators (3-1) to a victory over Whittier (2-2) in an El Segundo tournament semifinal.

La Habra Sonora 7, Corona del Mar 1--Eric Anderson had two hits and drove in two runs and Kevin Morris took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up three hits to lead the Raiders (4-0) to a victory over Corona del Mar (2-2) in a Newport Elks tournament semifinal. Sonora plays the winner of Santa Ana Mater Dei and Riverside Arlington in the championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Santa Ana Foothill High.

In girls’ softball:

San Clemente 3, Fullerton 2 (8 innings)--Jessica Clark, who had two hits, scored the winning run on a balk in a nonleague game at Fullerton.

Dominique Luoni went the distance with seven strikeouts, no walks and no earned runs for the Tritons (2-1).

Bri Mahr had a double for Fullerton (2-3).

Santa Ana Mater Dei 4, Los Alamitos 3--Tonye McCorkle’s two-run double was the key hit in a four-run fourth inning for Mater Dei (4-0) in a nonleague victory over host Los Alamitos (2-1).
