Police sealed off the Beverly Center on Saturday as they sought two people believed to be involved in a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured an elderly couple.

Police were unable to find the man and woman in the block-long mall during a three-hour search, but they did take the car’s driver into custody, said Officer Don Cox of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police tried to stop the car for an unknown reason about 2:30 p.m., but it took off. Police chased the vehicle to the entrance of the mall at Beverly and La Cienega boulevards, where it hit several parked cars and struck two pedestrians, Cox said.

The injured man and woman, whose ages and identities were not immediately released, were taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in serious condition, the police spokesman said.
