Man Held in Shooting at Bank
A Quartz Hill man who allegedly shot a teller in the shoulder while trying to rob a bank was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery.
Ryan Layton, 20, was arrested at a nearby carwash shortly after the 9:45 a.m. robbery of Antelope Valley Bank in Quartz Hill. He was held without bail at the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lancaster Station.
Authorities said Layton entered the bank in the 42000 block of 50th Street West wearing a yellow bandanna on his face and brandishing a chrome revolver.
“He jumped over the counter and walked up and down the line of tellers saying, ‘Give me all your money. Give me the money,’” FBI spokesperson Cheryl Mimura said. “When he approached the last teller, he shot her in the shoulder area.” He then fled empty-handed.
The teller, whose name was not released, was airlifted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where she was in stable condition late Friday, officials said.
Witnesses described the suspect as being “very thin,” about 6 feet 2 and 130-140 pounds.
Sheriff’s officials said Layton matched the description “very well.”
Mimura said this was the first bank robbery of the year in the Antelope and Santa Clarita Valley areas of north Los Angeles County.
