Maruyama Leads With Birdie Run

Shigeki Maruyama made four consecutive birdies Friday on his way to a seven-under-par 63 and a two-stroke lead in the Byron Nelson Classic at Irving, Texas.

Maruyama pulled away from the pack with birdies on two of his last three holes and finished at 10-under 130.

Paul Stankowski had a 65 on the Cottonwood Valley course and was two strokes behind at 132, along with Jim Carter (67).

Phil Mickelson had a 64 and was at 133, and Tiger Woods shot a 65 on the TPC at Las Colinas to make the cut for the 87th consecutive tour event. He is at 136.

John Schroeder shot a four-under 68 in his first tournament since having hernia surgery for a share of the lead in the TD Waterhouse Championship at Kansas City, Mo. Bob Eastwood, who holed out twice from off the green, and defending champion Ed Dougherty also opened with 68s.... Brandie Burton, working her way back from her third shoulder surgery, shot a three-under 69 to take a one-stroke lead over Annika Sorenstam in the suspended second round of the Aerus Electrolux USA Championship at Franklin, Tenn. She is at eight-under 136.... Colin Montgomerie shot a five-under 67 and moved into a three-way tie for the lead after two rounds of the Benson and Hedges International at Sutton Coldfield, England. John Daly shot a 69 and was at 139, one behind.
