Ramos to Announce His Retirement

Tab Ramos, considered the best U.S. soccer playmaker ever, will announce his retirement at the end of the Major League Soccer season, a source close to the league said Monday.

Ramos would not confirm the report in a telephone interview. However, a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the announcement would be made today.

A news conference has been scheduled at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, where Ramos first burst onto the national scene as a 15-year-old playing for the United States in a qualifier for the FIFA World Youth Championship.

“I think it’s best to be left for tomorrow,” Ramos said.

Born in Uruguay and reared in New Jersey, Ramos appeared on the U.S. World Cup team in 1990, 1994 and 1998 and had eight goals in 87 international appearances.
