Check Him Out on a Streak, Favored to Win

A winner of four in a row for part owner and trainer Blane Schvaneveldt, Check Him Out will be favored to keep the streak going in tonight’s $288,950 Los Alamitos Derby.

The Derby, a Grade I at 400 yards, brings together the 10 fastest qualifiers from trials held a couple of weeks ago. Check Him Out, who has won nine of 17, was the top qualifier, winning in 19.60 seconds.

Check Him Out will leave from the outside post. A victory would give him his second Grade I win in a about three months. He won the Golden State Derby at 5-1 on Aug. 17.

Other serious contenders include Panther Mountain, who qualified in 19.77 seconds, Sassy Smith, who won his trial in 19.72 seconds, Ddd De Great Saiga, Miami Cartel and Agouti.

Shots in the dark: Rubbertigerpants shortens up for trainer Billy Lewis in the seventh after a wide trip. Scuba Steve switches to jockey Eddie Garcia in the 10th.
