A Ventura resident was arrested Monday for allegedly brandishing a knife at a police officer, authorities said.

Michael Moss, 48, is accused of pulling a knife on Ventura Officer Mark Cleavenger, who had stopped Moss on suspicion of violating a restraining order, police said.

Moss, standing near a service station at Telephone and Kimball roads, reportedly told officers, “This time you are going to have to shoot me.”

As Moss advanced on Cleavenger, the officer backed away, drew his gun and sprayed Moss with pepper spray, police said. The pepper spray hit Moss near his chin and had no effect, but he surrendered minutes later when more police units arrived.

Moss was taken to Ventura County Medical Center then booked at the Ventura County Jail.
