Suspect Dead, CHP Officer Hurt in Shootout
From Staff and Wire Reports
A California Highway Patrol officer was wounded and a suspect killed Tuesday in a shootout that closed southbound lanes of California 101 in San Luis Obispo County for six hours.
Officer Jason McEwen, a seven-year CHP veteran, was assisting Caltrans workers when he “initiated an enforcement stop” involving the suspect, said CHP Officer Joe Cashdan. A struggle ensued, and McEwen sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand. McEwen returned fire and killed the suspect, Cashdan said.
