Giguere Returns to Comfort Level

Panic never entered the picture. Concern, on the other hand, was in living color.

Mighty Duck goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere was playing at a level that made him and Coach Mike Babcock uncomfortable. Giguere, drafted 13th overall by Hartford in 1995, had finally blossomed last season into a top goalie.

After a shaky start, that assessment has returned. Giguere stopped 28 of 30 shots -- 15 of 16 in the first period -- giving the Ducks a chance to rally for a 3-2 overtime victory over Colorado on Friday.

“I brought my battle level a little higher,” Giguere said. “That was lacking [earlier this season]. I feel better right now.”

He should.

Giguere was one of the best-kept secrets in the NHL last season. His 2.13 goals-against average was fifth in the NHL. His .920 save percentage was tied for fifth.

But he struggled in those areas at the start of this season. Giguere had an .890 save percentage through the first eight games. His record was 1-5-2.

That has turned around. Giguere has given up seven goals in his last three starts and has stopped 101 of 108 shots, a .935 save percentage.

“That what he’s suppose to be like,” Babcock said. “All he needs to do is feel good. The next thing you know we’re off to the races.”

Avalanche defenseman Rob Blake sat out Friday’s game against the Ducks. He was not missed by the Ducks, especially by Paul Kariya.

“You always have to be aware of him out there,” Kariya said. “He has that butt check that can kill you.”
