FBI Spied on Fischer’s Mother, Papers Show
Bobby Fischer, the chess prodigy who won a world title in 1972, was investigated by FBI agents who suspected his mother was a Communist spy, according to FBI files obtained by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
After years of reading her mail and studying her canceled checks, the FBI concluded Regina Fischer was not a spy.
A pediatrician who spoke eight languages, Regina Fischer died in 1997. Bobby Fischer, 59, now rarely appears in public. In interviews, he praised the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, saying the U.S. should be “wiped out.”
