Pepperdine Loses in Overtime, 95-81

Sophomore forward Danny Granger had 29 points and 20 rebounds as Bradley rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes to beat Pepperdine in overtime, 95-81, Friday at Peoria, Ill.

Phillip Gilbert had 28 points and 10 rebounds for Bradley, which won its first game with new Coach Jim Les. Sophomore guard Terrance Johnson and senior guard Devin Montgomery each scored 20 points for Pepperdine (0-1).

Gilbert’s three-point play with 22 seconds remaining capped a 9-0 run and gave the Braves a 77-75 lead. But Pepperdine forced overtime when Montgomery made a layup with 18 seconds left and Gilbert missed a three-point attempt.

No. 7 Oklahoma 87, UC Irvine 65 -- Ebi Ere scored 14 points and Oklahomaused a 17-1 run in the second half to pull away and win at Norman, Okla. The Sooners (1-1) forced 23 turnovers. Adam Parada had 19 points for Irvine (0-1), including seven straight during a 4 1/2-minute stretch, in which the Anteaters held Oklahoma to one basket and cut the lead to 58-51 with 9:27 left, before the Sooners made their big run.

Loyola Marymount 85, Loyola Chicago 79 -- Guard Brandon Worthy scored 24 points, the best freshman debut in school history, to help the Lions win their season opener at Gersten Pavilion. Worthy was among five Lion freshmen who combined for 42 points. Sophomore guard Charles Brown added 15 points for the Lions, including a three-point shot to give them the lead for good, 70-67, with 4:22 to play. A minute later, Brown’s layup began an 8-0 run for a 78-69 lead.

Mark Hull scored 23 points but UC Santa Barbara lost to Weber State, 91-82, in the first round of the BP Top of the World Classic at Fairbanks, Alaska.... Long Beach State committed 34 turnovers in an 89-61 loss to Charlotte at Charlotte, N.C.... Portland State rallied from a 21-point deficit to beat Cal State Northridge, 69-65, at Portland, Ore.... Ralphy Holmes had 17 points in Cal State Fullerton’s 83-76 loss to Texas A&M; Corpus Christi in the Hawaiian Airlines Tip-Off tournament at Honolulu.
