Carla Bennett had 15 points and Drake’s defense made three stands in the final minute as the Bulldogs defeated No. 20 Iowa State, 63-61, Wednesday night at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa State (1-1), which defeated Drake by 30 points each of the last two seasons, suffered its first loss in a nonconference regular-season game at home since Drake won at Hilton Coliseum on Dec. 7, 1994.

“We had a lot of wide-open shots that we missed,” said Iowa State Coach Bill Fennelly, who had been 39-0 against nonconference foes in the regular season. “With a team like we have, we have to execute to win and we didn’t do that.”
