Greenwood Takes Don Lugo Basketball Job

Chino Don Lugo High has selected David Greenwood to replace Eric Highstreet as its boys’ basketball coach. The decision is pending approval by the Chino Valley Unified School District at its meeting Thursday.

“He brings a wealth of experience to the program,” Athletic Director Joe Marcos said. “I think when word got out that he was applying, not too many other people submitted applications.”

Greenwood, 45, was a two-time All-American and four-year starter at UCLA in the late 1970s. He played in the NBA for 12 seasons and was a member of the Detroit Pistons’ championship team in 1990.

He has a proven coaching record at the high school level, leading his alma mater, L.A. Verbum Dei, to state Division IV titles in 1997-98 and ‘98-’99. The Eagles were 23-5 in ‘97-’98 and 31-7 in ‘98-’99.

Don Lugo finished 4-23 last season, including an 0-10 mark in the Baseline League. Highstreet resigned from the position in early September after the administration approached him about working with another coach.

“The administration felt they needed a big-name coach who could keep the talent within the community from leaving and also draw talent in from outside the area,” Highstreet said.
