Going for a Grand Slam

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who had a narrow turf victory Saturday with favored Rolly Polly in the Sen. Ken Maddy Handicap, has a legitimate shot at winning all four of today’s grass races on a holiday card at Santa Anita.

In the second, a starter allowance at 1 1/2 miles, Valenzuela will be on likely favorite Nates Colony, a proven stayer who has run well at the distance before.

In the fifth, Valenzuela will be aboard Kithira, a three-time winner in France who drops out of Grade I company.

Valenzuela’s mount in the seventh, the second division of the Ramser, is Nobilissime, a winner at the race’s distance. Then, in the ninth, Valenzuela will ride the Bobby Frankel-trained Six Hitter.

Race of the day: Monrow, who has won five of seven on the Bay Meadows turf course, heads a full field in today’s seventh at that track. The $35,000 optional claimer is at a mile on turf.

Who’s hot: Rene Douglas. He is running away with another riding title at Arlington Park. Heading into the long weekend, he had a 152-82 advantage over Elvis Trujillo.

Who’s not: Peter Wilson. The trainer, who has a string at Bay Meadows, had only three wins from his first 49 starters this year.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Nates Colony in the second, American Pastime in the third and using all in the fourth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/25. Money: Previous day/meet total: $13/$152.40. Total money bet: $174.
