Re “Audit Urges Major Reforms of Visitors Bureau Spending,” Oct. 15: With all the uproar over the performance of the L.A. Convention and Visitors Bureau, nobody has bothered to do a competitive assessment of the Los Angeles “product.” There is no major hotel next to the Convention Center, the area around the center is rather bleak, and downtown L.A. on the weekend (when many visitors to business shows arrive) is also grim. Street traffic patterns tend to confuse most drivers, even L.A. residents. So besides “auditing” the bureau, we also need to audit the product and come up with a plan to remedy its shortcomings.
