Police Shoot, Wound Carjacking Suspect in West Los Angeles

Two Los Angeles Police Department officers shot and wounded a carjacking suspect in a stolen car Tuesday after he allegedly tried to run them down in a narrow West Los Angeles alley, department officials said.

It was the 25th time this year LAPD officers shot at and hit suspects.

The unidentified man driving a stolen Hyundai was shot multiple times by officers Chiquita Brown and Robert Lockhart about 10:15 a.m. in a driveway at the south side of an apartment building in the 1700 block of Beloit Avenue, Deputy Chief David Kalish said.

“Officers ordered the suspect to stop the vehicle. The suspect attempted to run over the officers in a very narrow driveway. The officers directly in the path of the vehicle fired several shots,” Kalish said. “The vehicle after the shooting collided with the side of the apartment building.”

The suspect is expected to survive. Officers found a semi-automatic pistol in the car.

The wounded man matched the description of a carjacker who stole a vehicle at gunpoint from a woman in the Mar Vista area about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, Kalish said. The woman was loading her Hyundai in the 4300 block of Berryman Avenue when the man, armed with a semiautomatic pistol, demanded her car keys and then drove away, he said. The woman was not hurt.

Officers located the car using the LoJack system. The man, seated in the car, saw the approaching officers and tried to pull out of the narrow driveway.

The incident is being investigated by the LAPD, the district attorney’s office and the Police Commission’s inspector general, Kalish said.
