From Staff and Wire Reports

Jerry Stackhouse was traded from Detroit to the Washington Wizards in a six-player deal Wednesday that sent fellow shooting guard Richard Hamilton to the Pistons.

The Pistons sent Stackhouse, 27, forward Brian Cardinal, 25, and center Ratko Varda, 23, to the Wizards for Hamilton, 24, forward Bobby Simmons, 22, and guard Hubert Davis, 32.

“When you have the opportunity to add an All-Star player of Jerry’s caliber, you can’t hesitate on the chance to strengthen the team,” Wizard General Manager Wes Unseld said. “We had to part with several players we were very high on, but we feel we have improved.”

Webber, 29, has said he received only small amounts of money, mostly under $50.

Webber was released on a $10,000 bond and a pretrial conference was scheduled for Sept. 26. Webber left the federal courthouse in downtown Detroit without speaking to reporters.

Webber was indicted Monday, along with his father and his aunt, who did not appear at the hearing. Arraignment dates have not yet been set for Webber’s father, Mayce Webber Jr., and his aunt, Charlene Johnson.

The two bid leaders at the center of the Olympic bribery scandal got financial settlements more than three years after being forced off the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.

Tom Welch, president of the 2002 bid and organizing committees, was paid $1 million, SLOC President Fraser Bullock said. Bullock wouldn’t say how much was given to Dave Johnson, who was forced out in January 1999 from his job as senior vice president, but the Salt Lake Tribune reported Wednesday that Johnson received $200,000. Johnson and his lawyer would not confirm that.

A federal grand jury indicted the two more than two years ago on 15 felony charges of lavishing $1 million in cash, gifts and favors on International Olympic Committee delegates who awarded Salt Lake City the Winter Olympics.
