Record-Holder Makes Debut

Classic Sassy Chic, who set a world record for 350 yards last year in Texas, will make her first start of 2003 tonight in the first of three trials for the $155,400 La Primera Del Ano Derby.

Owned by Jackie and Rod Macpherson and trained by Felix Gonzalez, the 3-year-old A Classic Dash filly won the Juvenile Challenge Championship at Lone Star Park on Nov. 2 while completing the distance in 17.135 seconds. She has five other wins.

A total of 21 3-year-old fillies were entered in the three trials at 400 yards. The 10 fastest qualifiers will move on to the La Primera Del Ano Derby in two weeks.

The second trial includes A Special Sno Flo and the Dennis Ekins-trained duo of Scootnfly and A Tempting Chick and the third is topped by the Kelly Lewis-trained pair of Just Think and Female Friend.

The picks: 1. Ells Half Angel. 2. Ps Stinas Sage. 3. Illumine. 4. Blushing Blake. 5. Im Takin Over. 6. Flying Jeb. 7. Classic Sassy Chic. 8. A Tempting Chick. 9. Female Friend. 10. Red Terms.

Four! Single Ells Half Angel in the first, use Sherife Usa and Ps Stinas Sage in the second, all in the third and Blushing Blake and Superoyal Special in the fourth.

Shots in the dark: Calabogie could fire fresh for trainer Donna McArthur in the seventh. Ipomea makes her first start of 2003 in the eighth.
