Firefighters Contain 3-Day Wildfire in Moreno Valley
A three-day wildfire in Moreno Valley that burned 1,668 acres and briefly threatened 50 homes in a remote area near the Riverside-San Bernardino County border was contained Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
The fire destroyed a mobile home, a motor home, a moving van, a small building and 14 vehicles, and also scorched 150 orange trees, said Joanne Evans, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department.
More than 700 firefighters worked to suppress the blaze, which started Monday on Locust Avenue near Redlands Boulevard.
The flames started dying down but reignited Tuesday morning as winds picked up and temperatures soared, fire officials said.
It spread to San Timoteo Canyon Road and Live Oak Canyon Road, near Redlands in San Bernardino County, threatening mobile homes and ranch houses in the rural community.
A hazardous-materials team was called Tuesday after firefighters found several ether and solvent cans that were at least 20 years old in what appeared to be a dump site for methamphetamine-making materials, said Capt. Rick Vogt of the Riverside County Fire Department.
