Once my neighbor got within striking distance of 40, he made getting in better shape a high priority. Although he’d never played hockey, I lent him a book that had helped me, “Strength, Conditioning and Injury Prevention for Hockey.”

My neighbor followed a beginner’s workout and got results almost immediately. What helped most was Chapter 2 on program planning.

He was able to plan a daily workout around his work schedule. His weightlifting-conditioning program was geared to get the most out of each training session and prevented plateaus and lulls, the problems that had led him to quit his previous workout programs.

Horrigan is a former speed-strength and conditioning coach for the Kings and has designed hundreds of personal programs for professional athletes. Kreis is the speed-strength and conditioning coach and assistant athletic director at the University of Colorado. Their conditioning book was written for anyone participating in sports. It breaks down everything about conditioning, from speed-strength training to overtraining, and it’s an easy read.

There are some sections that may be too advanced for recreational athletes but mostly, the book imparts helpful information.
