Gun locks for the taking

Share

California sheriff and police departments, along with the state Department of Fish and Game, have weighed in on the gun-lock debate with a conversation stopper: They’re giving away 1.2 million cable-style gun locks.

It’s part of a program called Project ChildSafe, managed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which is giving away 20 million gun locks around the nation.

The program is funded by a $50 million grant from the U.S. Justice Department.

Fish and Game will distribute the gun locks to new hunters through its mandatory hunter education training program, which teaches about 23,000 students each year.

Game wardens will also distribute the locks as they make their rounds to hunters and gun enthusiasts.

Joe Gonzales, the department’s hunter education coordinator, said Fish and Game endorsed the program “because it promotes the awareness of responsible firearm ownership and storage.”
