San Luis Obispo Beats UC Riverside, 83-77

Shane Schilling had 22 and Varnie Dennis had 19 points as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo edged UC Riverside, 83-77, Saturday at San Luis Obispo.

The Mustangs (6-5) improved to 2-0 in conference for the first time since joining the Big West for the 1996-97 season.

The Highlanders (1-7) led by as many as 13 points in the first half and had a 68-67 lead late in the second half before Cal Poly closed with a 15-10 run.

Freshman Nate Carter had 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead UC Riverside.

Kevin Butler scored 16 for the Highlanders, who have lost five in a row.

Cal Poly guards Steve Geary and Jason Allen finished with 11 points apiece.

WOMEN

Lindsay Taylor scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds as No. 22 UC Santa Barbara beat Cal State Fullerton, 69-33, at Fullerton.

UC Santa Barbara (7-2, 1-0 Big West) has won the last 17 games between the teams.

The Gauchos opened the game with an 18-3 run. Fullerton (3-9, 1-1) was held scoreless for the first 5:54 and made only one of 14 shots in the opening nine minutes.

The Titans made three of 25 shots to shoot 12% in the first half. UC Santa Barbara led, 38-10, at halftime.

Brandy Richardson had 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Gauchos. Jess Hansen had 11 and Lisa Willett added 10.

The Gauchos shot 46% from the field for the game.
