This Time, Dorsey Plays on the Winning Team

Miami’s Ken Dorsey passed for 192 yards and led a scoring drive in the East’s 20-17 victory in the East-West Shrine Classic in front of 29,211 Saturday at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco.

West Virginia’s Avon Cobourne ran for two touchdowns and Donald Lee of Mississippi State caught four passes for 122 yards and the go-ahead touchdown for the East.

Dorsey, of the national runner-up Hurricanes, was the first of three quarterbacks for the East, and returned in the fourth quarter. He completed nine of 18 passes and directed the scoring drive on the East’s first possession, capped by Cobourne’s 41-yard run.

Lee’s five-yard touchdown catch with 14:56 left gave the East a 13-10 lead, and Cobourne ran five yards for a touchdown with 49 seconds left.

Arizona quarterback Jason Johnson completed 17 of 30 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns for the West, including a 14-yard scoring pass to Keenan Howry of Oregon with three seconds left.

USC’s Sultan McCullough scored on a 76-yard screen pass 2:30 before halftime that gave the West a 10-6 lead.

Tennis

Lee Hyung-taik became the first South Korean winner in ATP tour history, defeating Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), in the Adidas International at Sydney, Australia. Second-seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the women’s title, defeating sixth-seeded Lindsay Davenport, 6-4, 6-3.

Brazil’s Gustavo Kuerten completed preparations for the Australian Open with a victory in the Heineken Open at Auckland, New Zealand, beating Slovakia’s Dominik Hrbaty, 6-3, 7-5.

Winter Sports

Stephan Eberharter won a downhill at Bormio, Italy, and regained the overall World Cup lead, indicating that the Austrian star has recovered from last month’s knee injury.

He skied to a commanding victory, finishing 0.48 seconds ahead of teammate Michael Walchhofer. American Daron Rahlves, who won a downhill in Bormio in December, was third in 2:00.04. American Bode Miller finished eighth. Miller overtook Eberharter for the overall lead last week after winning a giant slalom in Slovenia. Eberharter leads the overall standings with 655 points, followed by Miller at 610. Eberharter, the defending overall, downhill and super-giant slalom champion, was timed on the steep course in 1 minute 59.27 seconds.

Miscellany

Boxer Johnny Tapia, 35, was in critical condition at a Las Vegas hospital after falling at his home and losing consciousness early Saturday, hours after he was charged with possessing drug paraphernalia.

The five-time world champion, a former drug addict who has battled personal demons most of his life, had been depressed before the fall, his publicist said.

Tapia was put on a respirator and was being treated for head trauma, publicist Trayce Zimmerman said.

Tapia and his cousin were involved in a police standoff at a house near Bullhead City, Ariz., late Friday that ended with the arrest of two men and Tapia being given a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Tsuyoshi Shinjo will return to the New York Mets next season after agreeing to a one-year contract worth $600,000. Shinjo played one season for the Mets before being traded to San Francisco in December 2001. He hit .238 with nine homers and 37 runs batted in for the NL champion Giants and was put on waivers after the season.

Left-hander Mark Redman joined the Florida Marlins from the Detroit Tigers in a five-player trade. The Marlins sent right-hander Gary Knotts and minor league left-handers Nate Robertson and Rob Henkel to the Tigers for Redman and minor league right-hander Jason Fuell. Redman was 8-15 with a 4.21 earned-run average in 30 starts last season.

Canadian Olympic star Hayley Wickenheiser became the first woman to score a point in a men’s professional hockey game, assisting on a goal in a Finnish League game. A little more than 13 minutes into her first pro game in a men’s league, Wickenheiser won a faceoff in the offensive zone. She sent the puck back to the point, from where defenseman Matti Tevanen’s goal tied the score, 1-1. Wickenheiser didn’t take a shot during Kirkkonummi Salamat’s 7-3 victory over Imatra Kettera in the second division game at Kirkkonummi.

The top-ranked UCLA women’s gymnastics team ended the longest home winning streak in the history of NCAA sports, defeating Utah, 197.225-196.75, in a dual meet Friday night in the Huntsman Center at Salt Lake City. Utah’s streak dated 23 years and 170 meets. Jamie Dantzscher of the Bruins won the all-around with a score of 39.775.

Passings

Durwood Merrill, an American League umpire for 23 years who worked the 1988 World Series, died Saturday at 64 in Texarkana, Texas. He died of complications from a heart attack he suffered last Sunday. He retired after the 1999 season.
