Arkansas Beats No. 2 LSU, 82-72

Arkansas, which had never defeated a team ranked higher than sixth, took control with a 12-0 run in the second half Sunday and upset No. 2 Louisiana State, 82-72, ending the Tigers’ winning streak at 15 in a Southeastern Conference game at Fayetteville, Ark.

Arkansas, 16-2 overall, 3-0 SEC, stymied LSU (15-1, 3-1) after switching to a 2-3 zone late in the first half. Shameka Christon scored 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting to lead the No. 10 Razorbacks in front of 11,486, the largest crowd for a regular-season Arkansas women’s game at Bud Walton Arena.

LSU cut a 17-point deficit to 72-64 on Aiysha Smith’s jumper with 3:16 left. But Dana Cherry scored on a layup and the Razorbacks made eight of 10 free throws to put away the Tigers.

No. 4 Kansas State 88, Nebraska 54 -- The Wildcats (17-1, 4-0 Big 12) recorded their 12th consecutive victory and equaled the best start in program history. They also opened 2000-01 with wins in 17 of their first 18 games. Kansas State held Nebraska (7-7, 0-3) scoreless over an 8:30 stretch while taking a 45-21 lead at Lincoln, Neb.

No. 5 Tennessee 94, Florida 53 -- Gwen Jackson scored 32 points to lead the Lady Vols (14-3, 3-0 SEC) at Gainesville, Fla. She made 13 of 18 shots and all four of her free throws. The Gators (8-8, 0-4) sank only seven shots in the first half and made only 32.8% of their shots in the game.

No. 12 Minnesota 90, No. 9 Purdue 75 -- A record crowd of 13,117 at Williams Arena in Minneapolis watched Lindsay Whalen score 26 points to lead the Gophers (15-1, 4-1 Big Ten). The largest crowd to watch the women’s team at Minnesota play previously was 12,142 last season against Michigan State. Shereka Wright scored 28 points for the Boilermakers (14-3, 3-2).

No. 13 Penn State 75, Michigan State 70 -- The Nittany Lions (14-4, 5-1 Big Ten) led, 71-68, with 23 seconds left at State College, Pa., when Jess Strom stole the ball from the Spartans’ Kristin Haynie, was fouled and made both free throws. Kelli Roehrig led Michigan State (9-7, 2-3) with 17 points.

Georgia 67, No. 14 South Carolina 59 -- Alexis Kendrick made a three-point shot and two free throws in the final 1:17 as Georgia (12-4, 3-0) upset South Carolina (14-3, 2-2 SEC) at Columbia, S.C. Jocelyn Penn scored 21 of her 23 points in the second half for South Carolina.

No. 15 Mississippi State 69, Mississippi 60 -- LaToya Thomas scored 30 points and broke the school rebounding record to lead the Mississippi State (13-3, 2-1 SEC) at Oxford, Miss. Thomas’ nine rebounds in the game gave her 943 in her career to surpass the mark of 936 set by Sharon Thompson in 1998. Amber Watts had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Mississippi (11-5, 1-3).

No. 17 Vanderbilt 84, Kentucky 50 -- The Commodores (11-5, 1-2 SEC) trailed the Wildcats (8-7, 1-2), 30-28, with 3:43 left in the first half at Nashville, but took control with a 23-4 run.

No. 25 DePaul 63, South Florida 57 -- The Blue Demons (14-4, 3-0 Conference USA) improved to 9-0 at Chicago by beating the Bulls (5-11, 0-3).
