Giants’ Shockey Disciplined With $10,000 Fine

New York Giant rookie Jeremy Shockey was fined $10,000 for throwing a cup of ice into the stands and making an obscene gesture during a first-round playoff loss at San Francisco.

The NFL docked the all-pro tight end $5,000 for each act, league spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday.

Shockey, a rookie who also made the Pro Bowl, threw the cup over his shoulder in the first quarter while being heckled by fans after he complained about the officiating. The cup hit two children seated in the first row behind the Giant bench.

The Giants apologized and gave the boys a football. Later, they were invited to the locker room, where Shockey signed the ball.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator and Baltimore Raven linebacker coach Mike Smith as defensive coordinator, according to a league source. The two will be introduced today as new coach Jack Del Rio’s key assistants.

The moves are consistent with the team’s front-office youth movement. Smith is 43 and Musgrave is 35. They’ll work with Del Rio, 39, who was hired last week after a year as Carolina’s defensive coordinator.

The Denver Broncos promoted Larry Coyer to defensive coordinator, filling the spot left by Ray Rhodes less than two weeks ago. The Broncos also promoted former player Steve Watson to wide receiver coach.

Tennessee Titan kicker Joe Nedney had an MRI exam on his hyperextended right knee, which he injured while trying to make a tackle in the first half of the AFC championship game. Results of the MRI were not immediately available, and Coach Jeff Fisher declined to say whether Nedney would need surgery.

The shift to prime time worked for the NFL, with the conference championship games drawing preliminary ratings a combined 8% higher than last season.

The CBS telecast of Oakland’s 41-24 victory over Tennessee in the AFC title game drew a 26.4 preliminary rating -- the best in three years. Fox’s broadcast of Tampa Bay’s 27-10 victory over Philadelphia in the NFC title game had a 23.8 preliminary rating. That was also the best for the NFC in three years.

Sunday’s games were the highest-rated shows of the week.
