Lake Forest El Toro makes its first appearance in the rankings after completing the first round of South Coast League play with a 1-0 victory Jan. 24 at Mission Viejo. El Toro, which will play Friday at two-time defending South Coast League champion Dana Point Dana Hills, is averaging less than two goals a game. But the Chargers have shut out 13 opponents and given up only eight goals.

Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley replaces North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake in the No. 1 spot after the Cougars earned victories over Lake Forest El Toro and Dana Point Dana Hills, and the Wolverines posted their second consecutive tie, a 2-2 result with Flintridge Sacred Heart. Santa Margarita, which is riding a five-match winning streak, takes over the No. 2 spot. El Toro rebounded from the Capistrano Valley loss to take sole possession of first place in the rugged South Coast League with a 1-0 victory over Mission Viejo on Saturday. Woodland Hills El Camino Real moves to No. 8 with its fourth consecutive victory over City Section rival Granada Hills. Unbeaten and untied Canyon Country Canyon debuts at No. 10.

With most of the Southland’s best teams competing in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, the top 10 was due for a shakeup. Santa Ana Foothill maintained its season-long grip on the top spot with a 10-9 sudden-death victory Saturday over Newport Harbor in the championship game. Santa Margarita appears to be getting it together after staying close to Foothill before losing, 5-3, in a semifinal, then defeating Corona del Mar, 7-3, in the third-place game. Los Alamitos made the biggest jump in the rankings thanks to a 2-1 victory over Long Beach Wilson in a fifth-place semifinal. The Griffins were then edged, 4-3, in the fifth-place game by Santa Barbara. Villa Park returns to the top 10 after finishing 12th at Santa Barbara. Riverside Poly took a tumble after losing, 10-9, last Tuesday to Riverside Arlington in an Ivy League game but regrouped to finish third at the Placentia El Dorado tournament.

Temecula Valley rebounded from its disappointing 17th-place finish at the Five Counties Invitational by winning the Riverside County Championships on Jan. 25. It was the seventh victory in the last nine county championships for Temecula Valley, which rode weight-class victories from Morgan Atkinson at 130 pounds and Cory Beeson at 140 to finish 54.5 points ahead of Riverside La Sierra. Temecula Valley had nine wrestlers finish among the top six in their weight classes. Laguna Hills, a late withdrawal from Five Counties, took advantage of the extra rest and won its own tournament for the first time in three years. Steve Jarmie (112) and Pat Gyotoku (119) won individual titles for Laguna Hills, which had six wrestlers reach the finals to finish 25.5 points ahead of runner-up San Clemente. Top-ranked Santa Ana Calvary Chapel has a dual meet tonight at No. 2 Santa Ana and a home dual Friday night against defending state champion Bakersfield.
