B.J. Wie, the father and caddie for 13-year-old golfer Michelle Wie, on Saturday rescinded his accusation that LPGA professional Danielle Ammaccapane had purposely bumped his daughter while the two were paired together during the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open.

The father said Saturday that Ammaccapane simply waved his daughter aside because Michelle was standing in her putting line at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. On Friday, B.J. Wie told reporters that Ammaccapane had “bumped” Michelle.

“I think it was misrepresented to reporters,” B.J. Wie said. “It’s not like football bumping or tackling. There was no physical contact.”

Michelle Wie was “too emotional” to talk about the incident, B.J. Wie said, and Ammaccapane refused comment, though she did issue a written statement through the LPGA Tour.

“I was very upset and disappointed after being accused of something that’s not true,” she said in the statement. “I appreciate Mr. Wie’s honesty today in setting the record straight.”

B.J. Wie did not back down from his accusation that Ammaccapane had used “nasty” words in the scoring tent after the first round while chastising his daughter for violations of golf etiquette.

He also said that there was an incident Saturday morning after they arrived at the golf course, but he would not elaborate.

Michelle Wie shot five-over-par 76 in the third round. Ammaccapane, playing five groups in front of Wie on Saturday, shot 73.
