From Staff Reports

Willie Guillory has been forced to resign as football coach at Long Beach Jordan in the wake of a brawl at a non-contact game Tuesday at Jordan.

Guillory, who coached for five seasons, said he was asked to resign because he failed to control his players in a fight during a passing league game between Jordan and Long Beach Cabrillo.

Guillory said he acted appropriately during the brawl.

“I broke up the situation,” Guillory said. “Anyone who was there could tell you that.”

Guillory, who will retain his position as a physical education teacher, was in the midst of trying to turn around a program that had struggled in the shadow of national powerhouse Long Beach Poly.

Jordan went a combined 15-6 in 2000-01 but tumbled to 4-6 last season and was crushed by Long Beach Poly, 50-12, in the final week of the regular season.

Jordan Principal Greg Mendoza declined to discuss specifics of Guillory’s resignation.

“Coach Guillory has indicated to us he has resigned for personal reasons,” Mendoza said. “We’re going to accept the resignation.”

Some witnesses said Guillory, 50, did not act inappropriately during the brawl.

“He was being called maniacal and inciting our kids to fight, but I was there and he was trying to get everything under control,” Jordan assistant coach Carlos Ruiz said.
