Saturdays Promise Looks for a Turn of Fortune

Share

Unbeaten in three races at 870 yards, Saturdays Promise will try for his biggest win yet in tonight’s $75,000 Catalina Derby.

Owned by Roger McDow and Michael Rosenthal and trained by Dan Francisco, the 3-year-old Boone’s Mill gelding was winless in his first six races at 300 and 350 yards but has blossomed around the turn. Gary Boag will ride Saturdays Promise, who won his Catalina Derby trial by more than a length in 46.02 seconds.

His main rivals are Ahme Gone and Brishane, who finished 1-2 in the other trial that went in 45.72 seconds. Ahme Gone is owned by Jackie and Rod Macpherson and trained by John Cooper, that combination having had success with 870 specialist and multiple stakes winner Sign Of Lanty. Ahme Gone beat Brishane by a nose on Feb. 20. Alex Bautista will ride Ahme Gone, and Baltazar Contreras has the mount for owner-trainer Blane Schvaneveldt on Brishane.
