South Pasadena police officers fatally shot a motorist in the Old Town Pasadena shopping district Saturday night after he led them on a three-mile chase.
The shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. near Fair Oaks Avenue and Holly Street, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Roberta Granek.
Officers started pursuing the 50-year-old man a few minutes earlier when they noticed him driving erratically at Monterey Road and Pasadena Avenue in South Pasadena, she said.
The chase ended in Pasadena when the man stopped his pickup truck and started walking toward officers with a gun in his hand, Granek said.
After the man refused orders to drop his gun, two officers opened fire, she said. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. His name was not immediately released. No officers or bystanders were injured.
The shooting occurred near four restaurants, but authorities said few people were outside at the time. Police immediately blocked off Fair Oaks Avenue as diners from nearby restaurants gathered behind the crime tape.
Sheriff’s detectives were investigating the shooting.
