Busy Day for O’Neill, Sadler

Share

Two of Hollywood Park’s three leading trainers will be heavily involved in today’s card.

Doug O’Neill, who tops the standings for the spring-summer meet with 11 victories, will have starters in half of the eight races. John Sadler, tied for second with six wins, will have horses in three races.

The most accomplished of O’Neill’s entrants is F J’s Pace, an 8-year-old gelded son of Gallant Prospector. F J’s Pace will be seeking his 13th lifetime win in the fourth, a $62,500 claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

In the money in more than half of his 49 starts, the Florida-bred will be facing Macward, the Sadler-trained Way To The Top and seven others.

Besides Way To The Top, who has won his last two grass sprints in Inglewood, Sadler will send out Anthony Eats, a 2-year-old first time starter, in the second and Waingarth in the seventh, a $55,000 optional claimer at 7 1/2 furlongs.

Only four others are scheduled to go in the day’s feature -- High Wire Act, who will be making his first start since Jan. 10 for owners Sid and Jenny Craig and trainer John Shirreffs, recent winner Primerica, Elaborate, who hasn’t won since May 13, 2001, and Arsen.

Race of the day: Hollywood Park’s sixth is a wide-open turf race at one mile for fillies and mares bred in California. The only entry with a win over the local grass is longshot Sandy Sneakers.

One for the road: Ava Anne was impressive breaking her maiden in her first route for trainer Mike Hushion and doesn’t have much to beat as she tries for her second win in today’s seventh at Belmont Park. The 3-year-old Gulch filly, coupled in the wagering with Halo Halo Halo, could be a single in a pick six with a carry-over of $39,926. Ava Anne will be ridden by apprentice Pablo Fragoso.

Exotically speaking: Trifecta in the fourth keying Way To The Top on top with Canny Fly, Macward and F J’s Pace in the two hole and all in the third spot.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/36. Money: Previous day/meet total: $15/$197.20. Total money bet: $260.
