1. SCRIMSHAW (5-1): Post: 2. Owners: Bob and Beverly Lewis. Trainer: Wayne Lukas. Jockey: Gary Stevens. Sire: Gulch. Dam: Rogue Girl. Record: 6-3-0-1. Earnings: $308,879.

Comments: Best hopes are his jockey and trainer. Stevens has won the Preakness with Silver Charm (1997) and Point Given (2001) and Lukas has won it six times with a record 28 starters, most recently with Charismatic in 1999.... Finished 11th in the Kentucky Derby and seems more suited to shorter distances.... Will be coupled in the wagering with Senor Swinger.

1A. SENOR SWINGER (5-1): Post: 10. Owners: Bob and Beverly Lewis. Trainer: Bob Baffert. Jockey: Pat Day.

Sire: El Prado. Dam: Smooth Swinger. Record: 5-3-0-0. Earnings: $157,408.

Comments: Baffert has won the Preakness four times since 1997, including the last two with Point Given and War Emblem.... Day also knows the way to the winner’s circle. He has won the race five times, with Tank’s Prospect (1985) and Summer Squall (1990), then three years in succession (1994-96) with Tabasco Cat, Timber Country and Louis Quatorze.... Senor Swinger looks to be improving, but his last victory came on the turf, so maybe the grass was the reason for his turnaround.... This will be his third start for the Lewises, who purchased him for a reported $1 million earlier this spring.

2. CHEROKEE’S BOY (15-1): Post: 1. Owner: Z W P Stable. Trainer: Gary Capuano. Jockey: Ryan Fogelsonger.

Sire: Citidancer. Dam: Cherokee Wonder. Record: 12-6-1-3. Earnings: $414,929.

Comments: The hometown hero has yet to lose in three starts at Pimlico.... Trying to become the first Maryland bred to win the race since Deputed Testamony in 1983.... Fogelsonger, who is based in Maryland, is second to Russell Baze among jockeys in victories this year.... In his only other graded stakes appearance, the colt was third behind Toccet in the Laurel Futurity on Nov. 16.

*

3. FOUFA’S WARRIOR (20-1): Post: 3. Owner: Sondra Bender. Trainer: Lawrence Murray. Jockey: Ramon Dominguez. Sire: Jade Hunter. Dam: Foufa. Record: 5-2-1-2. Earnings: $156,390.

Comments: Another Maryland bred, he is winless in three starts as a 3-year-old.... In his two appearances in graded stakes races, he was third behind Ten Most Wanted in the Illinois Derby and third to Senor Swinger in the American Turf at Churchill Downs 15 days ago.... It’s the first Preakness starter for Bender

and Murray.

4. KISSIN SAINT (20-1): Post: 4. Owners: Peter Karches and Michael Rankowitz. Trainer: Lisa Lewis. Jockey: Richard Migliore. Sire: Kissin Kris. Dam: Saintly Speaking. Record: 5-3-0-2. Earnings: $154,650.

Comments: Claimed for $50,000 out of a 14-length maiden victory on Jan. 12, he has won two of three starts for current connections.... Only defeat came when he was third to Empire Maker and Funny Cide in the Wood Memorial.... Lewis will be the 11th woman to saddle a horse in the Preakness, and the closest any have come to winning was when Magic Weisner, a 45-1 longshot, missed by three-quarters of a length when second to War Emblem last year for Nancy Alberts.

*

5. TEN CENTS A SHINE (15-1): Post: 5. Owners: Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey. Trainer: Wayne Lukas. Jockey: Jerry Bailey. Sire: Devil His Due. Dam: Aunt Mottz. Record: 7-2-1-0. Earnings: $80,120.

Comments: When Champali was knocked out of the race Wednesday morning because of colic, Bailey became available to ride what should be the longest shot in the field.... Bailey has won the race twice, with Hansel (1991) and Red Bullet, who upset Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000....Ten Cents A Shine split the field in the Kentucky Derby and has yet to prove himself in graded stakes.... Has been beaten by a combined 88 1/4 lengths.

*

6. MIDWAY ROAD (20-1): Post: 6. Owner: William S. Farish. Trainer: Neil Howard. Jockey: Robby Albarado. Sire: Jade Hunter. Dam: Fleet Road. Record: 7-3-0-1. Earnings: $93,045.

Comments: This will be his second start in a graded stakes and first as a 3-year-old.... He was seventh at 4-1 in the Kentucky Jockey Club, a Grade II, on Nov. 30 at Churchill Downs.... Howard is batting 1.000 in the Preakness. He won with Summer Squall in 1990 and hasn’t run a horse in the second Triple Crown race since.... Earned a trip to Pimlico with an 11 3/4-length allowance win at Keeneland on April 24.

7. PEACE RULES (8-5): Post: 7. Owner: Ed Gann. Trainer: Bobby Frankel. Jockey: Edgar Prado. Sire: Jules. Dam: Hold to Fashion. Record: 9-5-1-2. Earnings: $1,209,990.

Comments: With Empire Maker waiting for the Belmont Stakes, this is Frankel’s lone hope for his first win in a Triple Crown race.... He could be favored, and that did not work out well for the Gann-owned and Frankel-trained Medaglia d’Oro last year. He finished eighth at 3-1, more than 17 lengths behind War Emblem.... Prado is 0 for 6 in the race and has never finished better than fourth.

*

8. NEW YORK HERO (20-1): Post: 8. Owner: Paraneck Stable. Trainer: Jennifer Pedersen. Jockey: Jorge Chavez. Sire: Partner’s Hero. Dam: Nin Two. Record: 7-3-2-0. Earnings: $417,300.

Comments: Despite his name, he was bred in Maryland.... Beat a suspect field in the Lane’s End Futurity at Turfway Park in late March, then disappointed in the Wood Memorial and Withers in New York.... This will be his first collaboration with Chavez, who has rolled sixes with his previous Preakness runners, Adonis (1999) and Monarchos (2001).... Will be part of the pace.

*

9. FUNNY CIDE (7-5): Post: 9. Owner: Sackatoga Stable. Trainer: Barclay Tagg. Jockey: Jose Santos. Sire: Distorted Humor. Dam: Belle’s Good Cide. Record: 7-4-2-0. Earnings: $1,239,385.

Comments: Takes second step today in trying to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.... Worse than third only once in seven starts, he took advantage of a perfect trip to win the Derby.... His price will shrink considerably after he was 12-1 two weeks ago.... Isn’t scheduled to arrive at Pimlico until this morning, about eight hours before post time.... First Preakness starter for Tagg.
