A Huntington Beach man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of beating and slashing his estranged wife’s boyfriend to death with a hammer and knife, authorities said.

John Salcida, 22, was booked at the county jail ward at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana after the 7:20 a.m. altercation at an apartment in the 20300 block of Portview Circle. He had been taken to the hospital for treatment of cuts to his face and neck believed to have been self-inflicted, police said.

The victim’s name won’t be released until he is positively identified and his relatives are notified.

Police also did not identify the wife, who, they said, had been assaulted by Salcida in the past.

Thursday’s incident began with two 911 calls: one from a hysterical woman yelling for help, the other from a man making threatening statements.

When police arrived, a spokesman said, they found the boyfriend dead on a bedroom floor and Salcida with his estranged wife in a bathroom.

The woman was released unharmed.
