Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey is probably out for the season after injuring a knee in the New York Giants’ 27-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Shockey will not need surgery, but recovery time is six to eight weeks, Coach Jim Fassel said Monday. An MRI exam showed a partial tear of Shockey’s posterior cruciate ligament.

“Jeremy has been a big part of our offense,” Fassel said. “You can’t just unplug a guy like that and say that it is not going to effect you or hurt you.”

Fassel refused to say which knee Shockey hurt, although it appeared he was favoring his left knee.

Shockey, who set a team record for tight ends with 74 receptions as a rookie, had 48 catches this season for 535 yards and two touchdowns. He had three receptions for 46 yards against the Falcons.

Shockey left the locker room without comment Monday.

Baltimore rookie quarterback Kyle Boller probably will sit out the rest of the season after injuring his left leg in the Ravens’ 33-22 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday night.

Boller tore his quadriceps just above the knee in the second quarter. The injury could require surgery, but even in a best-case scenario he would not be able to return until late December.

Coach Brian Billick said Boller could be put on injured reserve as soon as today. Chris Redman will start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins and Anthony Wright will move up to No. 2 on the depth chart.

The NFL fined defensive lineman Marcus Stroud of the Jacksonville Jaguars $5,000 for a hit on Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair two weeks ago. A statement released by the NFL said Stroud “took two steps and unnecessarily struck” McNair on a play in the third quarter in the Titans’ 30-17 victory on Oct. 26.
