Burnett Lets Fists Do Talking

Mighty Duck enforcer Garrett Burnett and San Jose counterpart Scott Parker became fast acquaintances during a Sept. 27 exhibition game.

Burnett and Parker fought three times in the first period that night, and both were ejected. They had some hard feelings at the time, which included a shouting and finger-pointing display from the penalty box.

There were cooler heads for the rematch Tuesday, at least before the game.

“That was a different situation,” Burnett said. “Then, I was trying to make the team and had to fight anybody. Now, I’m trying to help my team win. If that means protecting our guys and fighting, then that’s what I’ll do.”

That being said, Burnett and Parker wasted little time Tuesday. They tangled 8 minutes 34 seconds into the first period.

The Colorado Avalanche’s open style is how former Duck Paul Kariya always envisioned playing hockey.

“I never woke up and said, ‘Mom, I had a great dream last night, we trapped this team to a standstill,’ ” Kariya told the Edmonton Sun.

The Ducks and Avalanche play Nov. 18 in Colorado.
